Description

Stunning set of 10 hand painted glass magic lantern slides for Hans Christian Andersen’s 1836 fairy tale The Little Mermaid (written in Dutch on the slides De Kleine Meermin). Incredibly bright colors and masterful shading technique on each slide. Artist is unknown. Most likely from the Netherlands in the 1920s or 1930s. Slides are taped on sides with black material. Distributed by magic lantern slide rental company D. Van Kreveld in Amsterdam.
The imaginative architecture in these slides is reminiscent of Danish (Jensen-Klint) and Spanish (Gaudí) expressionist styles of the 1910s and 1920s. The mermaid looks a bit like the ballerina who played The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen in 1909, Ellen Price (who is also the model for the face of the famous statue in the harbor, which was installed in 1913).
Each slide measures 3.25 x 3.25 inches. The set weighs 10 oz.
In good preowned condition. Not much wear and very bright colors. No chips or cracks. The first slide with the mermaid looking at the view has two scratches on the middle left, though. See last image. No box or papers included.
I am firm on the price for this set of slides. Please let me know if you would like more pictures. I will package the slides carefully to prepare for shipping!
