Beautiful, heavy, old Santa Clara Pueblo potLarge jar with deeply incised design and highly polished
"Pueblo Sta Clara" written on bottom
Provenance dates it to the early years of pottery by Margaret Tafoya (1904-2001)
Original owner of this pot died in 1944, so the pot is from early 1940s or earlier
Margaret was the family matriarch of many potters still working in this style
Style is also very indicative of Margaret Tafoya, although it is not artist-signed
Designs include rain clouds, lightening
Carved Avanyu or water serpent, the guardian of rivers and waterways
Avanyu appears on walls of caves near rivers in New Mexico and Arizona
Water was of primary importance to the pueblo dwellers
Pot itself weighs 5 pounds, 8 ounces
Measures 5.5 inches tall, 9 inches diameter (across), 32 inches circumference at widest point
