    Description

    TONITA ROYBAL SIGNED VASE
This pot is part of a big collection belonging to Mill Valley Modernist Architect Clyde Cohen. It has been appraised by multiple experts at the price we are asking.
This particular pot is in good condition. Clyde had a collection of 15 Native american pots which he collected over the years 6 of which are of the Blue Corn
San Ildefonso Blackware. You can see all 6 in the last photo.
Clyde purchased this piece in 2006 from Len Wood's in Laguna Beach.
    SIZE:
    5 1/2 x 4 1/2 Vase (signed Tonita)
Tonita (1892-1945) was the daughter of fellow potter Dominguita Pino Martinez & Navajo painter Santiago Martinez, and was the mother of potter Margaret Lou Roybal.
Tonita has been acclaimed one of the finest potters of the twentieth century. She was a contemporary of Maria Martinez and sometimes collaborated with Maria. In her early years, she not only made all her own pottery, she decorated it as well. Only after she married Juan Cruz Roybal in 1916, did she have someone else paint the pottery for her. After 1930, Juan painted most of the pottery.
Tonita Roybal is often compared to Maria Martinez in the quality of their pottery. It is accepted that she was equally proficient as Maria, but over-shadowed by the publicity showered on Maria.
This bowl is signed simply Tonita which indicates that it was probably made before Juan started painting the designs for her. It is therefore most likely a circa 1920s piece. The condition is outstanding for pottery of this vintage.
